Services for Ernest Walter "E.W." Fortenberry of Brookhaven , a long time educator, are at 2PM Thursday, Aug. 16, at the Hartman-Henderson Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in the Easthaven Cemetery. Visitation is Wednesday from 4 to 10PM at the funeral home.

E. W. Fortenberry, 82, died Sunday, Aug. 12, 1990, at King's Daughters Hospital in Brookhaven.

He was born Sept. 5, 1907, in Sullivan's Hollow in Smith County to Walter J. and Virginia Belle Barfield Fortenberry.

He was a 1929 graduate of Clinton High School and a 1932 graduate of Mississippi College receiving a B.S. degree. In 1951 he received a M.A. degree in school administration from the University of Southern Mississippi.

Mr. Fortenberry's teaching experiences began at Topeka-Tilton High School in Lawrence County where he taught math and coached basketball. From Topeka-Tilton he became principal of Sontag Elementary School in Lawrence County; principal of Carter's Creek High School in Pike County; principal of Monticello High School; superintendent of Monticello Special Consolidated School; assistant principal of Brookhaven High School; and assistant superintendent of Brookhaven Public Schools.

After 40 years in the field of education, he retired from the school system in 1972 and worked as a security guard for King's Daughters Hospital for several years. He also served for 15 years in the Mississippi National Guard. He was a member of
First Baptist Church Brookhaven, serving as a lifetime deacon and Sunday School teacher. He was also a past member of the Lion's Club and Exchange Club.

Survivors include his wife, Jimmie Smith Fortenberry; son, Archie Walter Fortenberry of Brookhaven; daughters, Elaine F. Perrill of Bangkok, Thailand, Linda F. Trest of Laurel, and Virginia F. Smith of Mobile, Ala; brothers, Col. Elmer G. Fortenberry, retired U.S.Air Force Biloxi, Capt. Earl T. Fortenberry, retired U.S. Navy Jacksonville, Fla.; sisters, Mrs .Jewel (Roy) Magee of Florence, Mrs Clara (Moody) Dukes of Brandon; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Francis Marion (F.M.) Fortenberry of Clinton.

Honorary pallbearers will be deacons of First Baptist Church and Archie Fortenberry's Sunday School Class.
