In 1885, Pawnee, Kansas; Nelson was enumerated with his parents J. K. and Polly Bartoo. Identified siblings were: A.H., V.O., Albertis, and Dulcie (1885 Census).

On 1 May 1898, Nelson E. Bartoo, of Winslow, Arizona Territory; enlisted as a Private in Company A of the 1st U.S. Volunteer Cavalry Regiment (The Rough Riders). On 17 May 1898, Nelson E. Bartoo (B: ~Mar 1878, Potter County, Pennsylvania) mustered in a camp near San Antonio, Texas. He was described as: 5 feet 3-1/2 inches, fair complexion, light blue eyes, light brown hair, and an Engineer. His parent/guardian was recorded as J.K. Bartoo of Larned, Kansas. From 19 to 29 Aug 1898, Nelson was absent on furlough. On 24 Jun 1898, Nelson participated in the Battle at Las Guasimas. On 1 July 1898, he participated in the Battle of the San Juan Heights and the Siege of Santiago de Cuba that followed. On 5 Sep 1898, Nelson was hospitalized with sickness. On 4 Oct 1898, New York City, Nelson was mustered out of service. His residence was recorded as Whipple Barracks, Arizona Territory. On 21 Oct 1949, his headstone application was submitted (muster Papers).

On 23 Jun 1899, Nelson E. Bartoo applied for his military pension as an invalid in Kansas. His unit was recorded as "A, 1 U.S. Vol. Cav." (Pension Card).

On 20 Apr 1910, Battle Mountain, Nevada; widowed Nelson Bartoo (B: ~1873, Pennsylvania) was enumerated as a masher mechanic for the railroad (1910 Census). His first wife was Cora O. Wilson (B: 27 Nov 1880, Larned, Kansas).

On 18 Jan 1920, Battle Mountain, Nevada; Nelson Bartoo (B: ~1873, Pennsylvania) and his wife Kate C. were enumerated with the following children: Ruth M, Theodore R., Jesse K., and Nelson E. Jr.. Nelson Sr. was recorded as a proprietor (1920 Census).

Nelson's headstone application records that he was interred in the Rose Hill Memorial Park in Whittier, California.
