On 1 May 1898, Nelson E. Bartoo, of Winslow, Arizona Territory; enlisted as a Private in Company A of the 1st U.S. Volunteer Cavalry Regiment (The Rough Riders). On 17 May 1898, Nelson E. Bartoo (B: ~Mar 1878, Potter County, Pennsylvania) mustered in a camp near San Antonio, Texas. He was described as: 5 feet 3-1/2 inches, fair complexion, light blue eyes, light brown hair, and an Engineer. His parent/guardian was recorded as J.K. Bartoo of Larned, Kansas. From 19 to 29 Aug 1898, Nelson was absent on furlough. On 24 Jun 1898, Nelson participated in the Battle at Las Guasimas. On 1 July 1898, he participated in the Battle of the San Juan Heights and the Siege of Santiago de Cuba that followed. On 5 Sep 1898, Nelson was hospitalized with sickness.
