Vernon R. Barnes, 92, of Parkersburg died Thursday October 6, 2011 at St. Joseph's Campus CCMC. He was born in Parkersburg, WV a son of the late Dennis E. and Lula (Taylor) Barnes.
He retired from Fox and Mason and was a United States Army veteran having served in WW II. He was an active member of American Legion Post 15, where he served as a member of the Color Guard. He was also a member of the Elks and Masonic Lodge #169.
He is survived by his daughter Helen West of Parkersburg; two granddaughters Mary West of Myrtle Beach, SC and Gretchen West of St. Albans, WV; three great grandchildren Lyra, Cree, and Nash West; a sister Marjorie King of Akron, OH; a sister-in-law Vernelle Mercer of Parkersburg; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife Ruth (Boone) Barnes and four brothers.
Services will be Monday 1:00 PM at Leavitt Funeral Home, Parkersburg with Reverend Dr. Stephen Melton officiating. Burial will be at Mt. Olivet Cemetery with military honors provided by American Legion Post 15. Visitation will be Sunday 2-5 PM.
