PORTAGE - Herbert M. Disch, age 82, passed away Wednesday, May 21, 2003, at Divine Savior Extended Care Facility, Portage. Herbert was born June 24, 1920, to Henry and Clara (Hefty) Disch in New Glarus. He was united in marriage Sept. 20, 1947, to Mary E. Graf in Bethel Lutheran Church, Madison. Mr. Disch attended New Glarus Schools and graduated from high school in 1938. After graduation, Herb attended Madison Business College.
On Nov. 11, 1942, Herb entered the U.S. Army at Fort Sheridan, Ill., and served in the South Pacific and participated in New Guinea and the Philippines Liberation on Luzon and later other islands. Herb served in a medical battalion with the 24th Infantry Division. He was awarded the Southern Philippines Liberation Meritorious Award, Bronze Arrowhead, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with two Bronze Stars, Asiatic-Pacific Theater Service Ribbon and Good Conduct Medal.
Upon discharge from the Army Dec. 4, 1945, after serving 35 months overseas, Herb returned to Rayovac Co. and later accepted a position with the Portage Hosiery Co. in 1952 as cost accountant and treasurer until his retirement in 1980. In his semi-retirement years, Herb served as a van driver for the Columbia County Aging Commission. Herb was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, American Legion Post No. 47, V.F.W. Post No. 1707, and Portage City Bowling Association, all of Portage.
Survivors include his wife, Mary; four children, Cheryl (David) Dragotis of Minnetonka, Minn., Debra (Tim) Macke of Mendota Heights, Minn., William (Susan) Disch of Norfolk, Neb., and Janell (Tony) Benish of Waunakee; a sister-in-law, Dorene Disch of New Glarus; seven grandchildren, Aaron, Traci, Brian, Justin, Katia, Lyndsey, and Nathan; four step-grandchildren, Dana, Daphne, Derek, and Damon; a great-grandchild, Dylan; and three step-great-grandchildren, Keal, Mallory, and Scout.
Herb was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Delmar; and a step-grandchild, Missy.
Visitation will be on Friday, May 23, 2003, from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. at PORT-AXTELL COMMUNITY FUNERAL HOME, 302 E. Conant St., Portage. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 24, 2003, at 10 a.m. at ST. JOHN'S LUTHERAN CHURCH, 850 Armstrong, Portage. Internment will follow at Silver Lake Cemetery.
