Gerald Edward "Ed" Mohnkern, 76, of President Road, Oil City RD 2, was dead on arrival at 5 pm Tuesday at Oil City Hospital. He was born Oct. 17, 1897, at St. Cloud, MN, son of George A. and Almedia Allen Mohnkern.
He was a research engineer for Oilwell Division of U. S. Steel Corp., retiring in October, 1962. He was a veteran of World War I, having served overseas and was wounded in action. He was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church in Siverly for the past 60 years, was chairman of the official board of the church, and taught Sunday School for 55 years. He was a charter member of American Legion, a member of the American Society of Metals, a board member and a life member of the Salvation Army Advisory Board. He was a former member and past president of the Oil City School District Board, serving in the 1940s. He was a member of the Oilwell Bowling League.
On Dec. 20, 1919, in the Bethel parsonage he married Velma Fry, who survives, with two sons, Theodore E. Mohnkern of Erie, and George Willis "Bill" Mohnkern of Bellingham, WA; a brother, Rev. Daniel E. Mohnkern of Medina, NY; four grandchildren, Christine and Susan Mohnkern of Bellingham, Mrs. Mark (Barbara) Medwid and Carol Mohnkern of Erie; and a great-grandchild, Melissa Mae Medwid of Erie.
Services will be at 2 pm Friday at Charles A. Morrison Funeral Home with Rev. David Holste, his pastor, officiating. Interment will be in Grove Hill Cemetery.
