Verna E. Bergemann

Verna E. Bergemann, 85, of Marion, N.C. passed away peacefully Monday, Sept. 11, 2006 in Mission St. Joseph's Hospital, Asheville.

She was born March 22, 1921 in Ransomville, N.Y., the daughter of the late George J. and Minnie Radloff Bergemann.

Verna was professor emeritus and chair of the Education Department at the University of North Carolina at Asheville, where she taught for 12 years.

Prior to coming to UNCA, she was a professor of education at the State University of New York at Oswego for 13 years.

She earned her Ed.D. at the University of Maryland, College Park, her M.A. at the State University of New York at Buffalo and her B.A. at the State University of New York at Brockport.

She taught elementary school in Niagara Falls, N.Y. and Los Alamos, N.M.

She has worked with beginning teachers as a helping teacher, as a cooperating teacher in a university laboratory school and as a consultant with the N.C. Department of Public Instruction.

She has been a professor of education at three universities and is author of numerous articles and activity workbooks for teachers and co-author of a text and guidebook for beginning teachers, one of which is being translated into Chinese.

For many years she has worked closely with volunteer organizations that attempt to improve adult literacy. In 1989, she was named Woman of Distinction and Woman of the Year by the city of Asheville for her outstanding contributions to literacy education.

She also served on Gov. Hunt's competency test commission.

In 1992, she chaired a school study committee for private schools in Asheville. In 1997, she was selected to appear in the 1997/1998 Who's Who in the South and Southeast.

Verna was beloved and admired by many students, colleagues, friends and family.

She was preceded by sisters Mabel C. Bergemann, Adeline I. Bergemann and Dorothy Veres.

She is survived by two sisters, Marie E. Bergemann of the Concordia Retirement Home, Cabot, Pa. and Betty McArthur of Naples, Fla.; two nieces, Carol A. Titel of Owensboro, Ky. and Linda McArthur of Naples, Fla. She is also survived by a dear friend, Elizabeth E. Hunt of Marion and numerous cousins.

A memorial service will be held in Emmanuel Lutheran Church, 51 Wilburn Place off Patton Avenue, Asheville, at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 16, 2006. The Rev. Keith Lee and Deacon Fred Kohls will conduct the service.

Burial will be at the family's home church, St. Peter's Lutheran Church, North Ridge, Ransomville, N.Y.

This individual is buried at St Peters Lutheran Cemetery, North Ridge. NOT St Peters, Walmore. This cemetery is located on Church Rd. North of HWY 104 in Niagara County, NY.
