|Birth: ||Dec. 4, 1884|
Chal was the oldest child of Rufus and Hanah, with four brothers Clarence, Clyde, Orville and Alva, and sister Hettie. With five sons on the farm to help with the work, there was time for play and fun if everyone worked hard.
Chal married Diskie Hafner May 24, 1908. They spent all their married life on farms on the North Fork River. Chal had a sawmill in partnership with his brother Clyde. In a sawmill accident Chal injured his hand, developing what was called blood-poisoning. The rest of his life he had stiff fingers.
Chal and Diskie were dairy farmers in their middle years, raising all their hay and grain. They were one of the first in the community to get a car, a 1921 Ford. They also had a radio the neighbors enjoyed listening to when they came to visit.
After Diskie's death Chal remained on the farm and remarried after several years. (This writer, a young girl at the time, remembers hearing that Chal had married again and being shocked that someone in their 80's would be getting married!) In the late 1970's they moved to Senior Housing at Willow Springs, MO. Chal died at age 96 while in the St Francis Hospital at Mountain View, MO.
