Samuel Gerber, father of Mrs. C. S. Hankins. is seriously ill at the home of his son in Argenta. His condition is
such that the physicians give the family no hope. His advanced age, seventy-six years, is against him. He was
taken ill in California and was brought home by his son about two weeks ago.
Mrs. Hankins is spending most of the time in Argenta on account of her father's illness.

Argenta, April 8.—Samuel Gerber died Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the residence of his son, P. E. Gerber.
Mr. Gerber had been In poor health for several months. Last fall he went to California, but became worse, and
his son, P. E. Gerber, went to California to bring his father home about two weeks ago. Since that time it has been known his condition was critical.
Mr. Gerber was 76 years old. He was born in Ohio in 1835 His early life was spent on his father's farm. When
he was 2l years old he and Miss Susannah Hillbrant were married and remained In Ohio for four years after their
marriage before coming to Illinois in 1859. They came in a covered wagon and settled on a farm near where Oreana is now.
They purchased forty acres of land from the Illinois Central railroad, paying $12.50 an acre. Mr. Gerber at the
time of his death owned nearly a section of land in that neighborhood, besides more than a section of land in
southern Illinois. He has been a most successful business
man and his accumulations have made him one of the wealthiest men In the county. He has been in the banking
business in Argenta since 1892.

Mr. and Mrs. Gerber celebrated their golden wedding anniversary Dec. 14, 1906. The reception was attended by
500 friends, and was one of the largest social gatherings ever held in Argenta or the country round about. Mrs. Gerber died in June of the following year.
Surviving Mr. Gerber are three children: Mrs C. S. Hankins of Decatur, Mrs. Lizzie Bennett and Edward Gerber
of Argenta and six grandchildren: Mrs. Neva Gerber of California, Mrs. Blanche Bricker of Snc? City, Ia, Orville and Charles Hankins of Decatur and Lulu? and Sam Bennett of Argenta.
No funeral arrangements have been made as yet.
