In 1860, he was a blacksmith presumably living in Perry County (although he is absent from that census) and stood 5' 5" tall with dark hair and gray eyes.
A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Harrisburg September 9, 1864, mustered into federal service there September 10 as a private with Co. E, 208th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company June 1, 1865.
