Born in Illinois, the son of a doctor, Edward was an early California pioneer during the California Gold Rush. He lists his occupation as "Capitalist" and "Speculator" working in the gold mining camps of Placer, Amador and Calaveras County. He lived and worked as a saloon keeper many years in Angels Camp, Calaveras County, until his death. Edward was married a short time to Addie Babcock of Auburn, California, and had one daughter, Maude Afleck-Street, born in Auburn, Placer County, California.
