Val was largely a self educated man who rose to head his own company which built grain elevators throughout SD.
He taught himself the violin and saxophone. He and his wife played for dances in Hoven. He went into the automobile sales business in the 1920's and had a lifelong interest in cars. He was a very fast driver and went through cars every few years. He had one of he very first Ford's that were produced in color in 1937.
