Veteran of the War of the Rebellion. Private, Co. E, 3rd WI. Inf., died at age 92, member of Eagle Post, G.A.R. Born in Lille Elvedalen, Tynset County, Norway. Enlisted in the Union Army Sept. 27, 1864, served 8 months and 13 days. Discharged June 9, 1865 at the close of the war.
An entry in the History of Dunn County, Wi. under the name of his son, Peter I. Peterson, that gives the family bio. States the father Simon was born in Lille Elvedalen ANNEX, Norway., his (Simon)parents were Peder Olsen and Anne Johnsdatter, farmers. "In 1860 they immigrated to America, but Peder Olsen died on shipboard while on the journey and was buried at Quebec, to which port the ship was bound. Thus bereaved, Mrs. Olsen with her son Simon came to Meridean, Dunn Co., WI. where she had a son and daughter living, Ole and Merith, who had come to America several years before. Ole spent the rest of his life at Old Meridean, but Merith married Espen Hanson and went to Crookston, MN., and her mother Anne went with her. Simon who was 26 when he came to America located first in La Crosse County, WI., where for one year he operated a rented farm. On Sept. 9 1861 he married in Bostwick Valley of that county to Elizabeth Lien, who was born in Norway May 25 1858. Soon after their marriage, in the fall of that year, they came to Dunn County, settling firt near Little Elk Creek. Then in 1862 Simon homesteaded a small place in the town of Rock Creek, residing there until 1870. That year he purchased his present farm of 160 acres in the town of Springbrook, adding to it until when he retired in 1902 he owned 377 acres in the Chippewa Bottoms. Many years he farmed with oxen. After the great flood of 1880 he entered into a contract with a lumber company to collect and put back into the river all the stray logs and lumber that had been scattered over the land in his neighborhood.
