JOHN E BABB: 64; who was sheriff from 1950-1954, died Thursday [11-19] in his home at 5823 N Nicolet Ave [Chicgo] after having been in failing health for some time. Also an attrny, MrBabb was an associate of the law firm of Siegan & Rubinoff, in general law practice in offices on Dearborn St; he retired in 1955. He also was 43rd Ward RepublicanCommitteeman, a position he held until he retired in 1955. During World War II, MrBabb-at the age of 37, gave up a law practice & volunteered to serve in the Office of Strategic Services as a lieu-tenant; trained & directed underwater demoli-tion teams. He remained active in the Naval Reserve after his discharge in 1946 & retired from the service with the rank of lieutenant commander. During his term as sheriff, MrBabb was best known for his crackdown on vice in the unincorporated areas of the cnty, ordering raids on suburban taverns used as coverups for gambling & prostitution. However, he later was criticized by such men as Virgil Peterson, then operating director of the Chicago Crime Commission, for his failure to halt gambling in the suburban areas.
Surviving are his widow-Barbara Ann; 6 children: Terry, William, JohnJr; BarbaraLara, Joanna, Pamela; 3 grandchildren & a sister.
Services for former CookCounty Sheriff JohnE Babb will be held Monday morning [11-23] in Drake & Son Funeral Home-Park Ridge.
