Born in St Louis, Mo. to Frank J and Stella Stangl, Sr, he attened Our Lady of Perpetual Catholic School in St Louis, then the archdiocesan Latin School in St Louis.
He bagan his studies as a seminarian at St Louis Preparatory Seminary and Kendrick Seminary and was sent to Rome to complete his theologcal studies for the priesthood. He was ORDAINED on Dec 19, 1953 at the North American college in Rome, Italy.
Father Stangl served a total of 54 years in the pristhood to include St. Peter Catholic Church in Jefferson City from 1954 to 1985, Our Lady of Lourdes in Columbia, the Newman Center at Univ of Missouri in Columbia. He served as the first editor of his diocesan newspaper, the Catholic Missourian, and as Chaplain at Fulton State Hospital in Fulton and at St. Jude Thaddeus in Mokane.
Father Stangl served American troops at more than a half-dozen military bases in Germany for nearly 11 years ( 1985 - 1996 ). He then came to North Carolina serving as Parochaial Vicor of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church and the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Rocky Mount , and St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Chapel Hill. In his last years, Father served as Sacramental Minister to the parishes of St Peter the Fisherman in Oriental, St Joan of Arc in Plymouth, and Holy Trinity in Williamston, NC ( 1996 - 2008 ).
A Vigil service, a rosary, and a Funeral Mass was held at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Rocky Mount with Most Reverend Michael F. Burbidge, Bishop of Raleigh as principal celebrant.
