Listed in the ROSTER of WISCONSIN VOLUNTEERS, WAR of the REBELLION, 1861-1865 (Published in 1886), PVT James Collins served three years in the Civil War with the Tenth Wisconsin Regiment.

James signed up in New Lisbon and was mustered into Company H at Camp Holton (Milwaukee) on 22 October 1861. From military records searched at National Archives: James Collins was left behind the unit twice for illness - from 10 February to 8 April 1862 he was left at Bacon Creek. From 1 October 1862 to 17 June 1863 he was left sick at Louisville. He was wounded at the battle of Chickamauga on 19 September 1863. Mustered out 3 November 1864 at Camp Holton. Final pay due soldier was $51.85
