John W. Watson was born and raised in the Harmony community of Johnson County, Arkansas. His parents were John William Watson and Caroline Carter Watson.
John was educated in the Johnson County, Arkansas public schools. After his graduation, he went to the Central Collegiate Institute in Altus, Arkansas to begin his advanced studies. That Institute was started in 1876 by the Rev. Isham Lafayette Burrow, a Methodist minister. The school had an initial enrollment of twenty students, but quickly grew and expanded. In 1890 the Institute moved and became what is now known as Hendrix College in Conway, Arkansas.
Upon the completion of his courses at the Institute in Altus, for his final medical studies, John then transferred to Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee. There he mastered his profession and graduated in March, 1882.
Later in 1882, John moved to the Oklahoma Indian Territory where he began his medical practice in Wynnewood, Oklahoma. Over the years, he became known as one of the most successful medical practitioners in the Wynnewood area. He also had more continuous years of service in Wynnewood than any of his peers during his tenure.
In Wynnewood he belonged to several associations and groups. Namely, he was a member of the Chickasaw Medical Association, the Wynnewood Lodge, No. 40, F. & A. M., Bethel Lodge, No. 9, K. T. and to the Wynnewood Lodge, No. 47, I.O.O.F.
On November 21, 1900 in the area now known as Garvin County, Oklahoma, John married Lizzie Belle Cochran Sinclair, the widow of Addison Gaines Sinclair. Addison had passed away on October 1, 1897, possibly in Indian Territory, but the exact location is undocumented. A copy of John and Lizzie's marriage certificate is shown on the right side of this page.
Upon his marriage to Lizzie, John gained a step-daughter named Estelle E. Sinclair, who was born September 9, 1888 in Wayne County, Tennessee. John and Lizzie had no children together from their union.
In 1907, John and his family left Wynnewood and moved to Ryan, Oklahoma, where they were enumerated in the 1910 US Census in the Blackburn Township of Jefferson County. The family then continued to reside in Ryan for the remainder of their lives.
In 1931 Lizzie preceeded John in death and was buried in the Ryan Cemetery in Jefferson County. When John died in 1936, he was laid to rest beside his wife.
Estelle, who never married, passed away in September, 1985 and was buried along side of her mother, Lizzie, and her step-father, John, in the family plot. Her Find a Grave memorial number is 65706981.
