Born 1873 to parents James Ewen Cameron (b.1841 Missouri, d.1921 Calif.) and Mary Agnes "Mollie" Symington (b.1850 Missouri, d.1907 Calif.). Two siblings that died in infancy Lena Cameron (1870-1871) and Robert Ewen Cameron (1871-1872). Recorded in Pleasant Hill, Missouri, at age 7 with parents (per 1880 Census). Father was a newspaper publisher. In 1897 married first husband Charles Wesley Van Benschoten (b.1867 Calif., d.1948 Nevada). Three children Mary Madeline Van B.-Adams-Waddell (b.1898 Calif., d.1977 Calif.), John Wesley Van Benschoten (later Jack W. Adams Sr., b.1900 Calif., d.1978 Calif.), and Winifred Irene Van B.-Adams-O'Neill (b.1902 Calif., d.1975 Calif.). Recorded in Grayson, Stanislaus Co., California (per 1900 Census) with husband and first child, just two weeks before birth of second. Divorced first husband Charles Van Benschoten circa 1907. In 1908, married second husband Charles Levi Adams (b.1869 Calif., d.1932 Calif.). Recorded in Bakersfield, Kern Co., California (per 1910 Census) with second husband and three children from first marriage. Those three children took on surname of Adams circa 1911. Recorded in Bakersfield with second husband (per 1920 and 1930 Censuses). Husband Charles Adams worked in mining industry in region. He died in Dec 1932. Mattie was an elementary school teacher most of her adult life. She died at age 61 in Arvin, southeast of Bakersfield. [Bio. by J.W. Adams]

Text of Mattie's obituary as it appeared in an unknown Kern County newspaper: "First Arvin Teacher is Called By Death. Mrs. Mattie Bell Adams, 61, native of Missouri and first teacher in the Arvin school, passed last night. She also had taught in the Franklin and Beardsley schools. Her home was at 2708 H street. She leaves two daughters, Mrs. J.S. Wadell of Mill Valley, and Mrs. L.A. O'Neill of Porterville, and a son, Jack W. Adams of Taft. Funeral services will be held in the Hopson Mortuary Saturday morning at 10:30 o'clock with the Reveren Roy Ogan officiating and interment will be in the perpetual care section of Union Cemetery. Pallbearers will be F.E. Adams, George Larson, M.L. Weitzel, Charles Sheaff, E.G. Norris and Ralph Twadell." [transcribed by J.W. Adams]
