In 1860, he was a farmer presumably living in Carroll County, Maryland. He stood 5' 9" tall and had light hair and gray eyes.
A Civil War veteran, he enlisted and mustered into federal service at Westminster, Carroll County, Maryland, August 8, 1862, as a private with Co. A, 6th Maryland Infantry. He was captured at Berryville, Virginia, June 13, 1863, and paroled the same day, then wounded at the battle of the Wilderness May 5, 1864. He returned to duty, detached as a sharpshooter in August 1864, and honorably discharged with his company June 20, 1865.
He married Mary Jane Heck in 1876 and fathered Anna Elizabeth (b. 1876 - married Samuel S. Aulthouse), Martha A. (b. 12/??/77), Sarah Jane "Sadie" (b. 03/??/80), William M. (b. 10/??/82), Harry E. (b. 05/??/85), and Luther A. (b. 03/??/89). His stated age at death is 77-11-5.
