QUITMAN — Services for Evan Woodrow Ivey will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Pine Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Buddy Braddock officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Wright's Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Ivey, 87, died Sunday, April 29, 2007, at H.C. Watkins Memorial Hospital in Quitman. He was born on Dec. 9, 1919 in Clarke County to the late Emmit and Bertha Ivey of Clarke County. In 1938 he married Eva Mae Prince of Clarke County and they were married for more than 64 years until her death in 2002.
Mr. Ivey served as song leader and Sunday School teacher at Center Ridge Baptist Church and Pine Grove Baptist Church. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps and served in World War II. He served as a gunner and radio operator on heavy bombers. After the war ended, he was assigned to the "Atom Smashers", a military unit that tested nuclear bombs on Pacific Islands.
He opened and operated Ivey Grocery, a country store in Clarke County. He also worked as an oil field pumper in Langsdale and Clarke County oil fields.
Survivors include his sons, Bobby Ray Ivey and his wife, Wanda, Roger Daniel; a daughter, Nelda Jean Holley and her husband Jeffrey; brothers, William "Billy" Ivey, and Thomas "Tommy" Ivey; grandchildren, Wayne Riley Jr., Judy Riley Darsey, Rebecca Riley, Traci Riley Mathis, Ronald Ivey, Stacy Holley, Christy Holley and Randy Holley; great-grandchildren, Matthew Riley, Christopher Riley, Riley Darsey, Morgan Darsey, Tyler Darsey, Stefani Finley, Anna Logan Mathis, Riley Catherine Mathis, Caroline Mathis, Michelle Harrison Jipson, Thomas Harrison, Robert Ivey, Grant Ivey, Miranda Sibani, Elias Sibani, Natalie Sibani, Madeline Hinton, Hanna Kai Holley and Ethan Holley; great-great-grandchildren, Bree Jipson, Ty Jipson, Arianna Harrison and Tyler Ivey and a former son-in-law, Dr. Wayne E. Riley.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Joseph Earl, granddaughter, Leisa Ivey; a grandson, Wade Hampton Holley, granddaughter, Joy Noel Holley and his oldest daughter, Glenda Nell.
Pallbearers will be Ronnie Ivey, Robert Ivey, Tom Harrison, Grant Ivey, Riley Darsey, and Christopher Riley.
Visitation will be today from 5 p.m.- 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
