Harold C. Burgston, 84, of Geneseo, passed away on Saturday, February 6, 2010 at the Hammond-Henry Hospital Skilled Care Unit, Geneseo.
Funeral services celebrating his life will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, February 12, at the First United Methodist Church, Geneseo. Rev. Chris Ritter will officiate. Burial will be in the Oakwood Cemetery, Geneseo. Visitation for Harold will be Thursday from 4-7 p.m. at Vandemore Funeral Home, Geneseo, where a Masonic Service will be held at 6:45 p.m. by the Stewart Masonic Lodge #92 AF&AM. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials be left to the First United Methodist Church, or the Hammond-Henry Hospital Auxiliary/Foundation.
Harold was born December 26, 1925 in Geneseo the son of Carl H. and Margaret (Searle) Burgston. He was a 1943 graduate of Geneseo High School. Harold was united in marriage to Helen Oetzell Mattson on December 31, 1969. Harold had been employed as an Assistant Underwriting Manager at Bituminous Casualty Corporation, Rock Island for 25 years from which he retired in 1986. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, a 50 year member of Stewart Masonic Lodge #92 AF&AM, Masonic Shriners, Peoria and the Geneseo Grid Club. Harold was also a member of Hammond-Henry Hospital Auxiliary, and Geneseo Kiwanis. He had served as Chairman of the Building Committee for Colona United Methodist Church, and was a committee member for the class of 1943. Harold enjoyed golf, playing cards, woodworking, volunteering, gardening, and keeping birds and squirrels fed.
Survivors include his wife Helen, five children and spouses Linda (Wayne) Chapman, West Des Moines, IA; Richard (Cheri) Burgston, Brooksville, FL; Connie (Ken) Kyte, North Augusta, SC; Larry (Kathy) Mattson, Wheaton, IL; Brenda (Ray) Bercume, Falmouth, ME; 11 grandchildren and spouses Bradly (Kris) Chapman, Eau Claire, WI; Amy (Reggie) Stalzer, West Des Moines, IA; Lisa (Jeff) Nyberg, St. Charles, MO; Kelly (Mike) McKenzie, Batavia, IL; Justin Mattson, Chicago, IL: Luke (Krysta) Mattson, Chicago, IL; Josh Mattson, Chicago, IL; Jill (Matt) Graham, Waxhaw, NC; Trevor Kyte, North Augusta, SC; Aaron Hatfield, New York, NY; Calvin Hatfield, Howard, OH; nine great grandchildren Calvin, Claire and Casey Stalzer, Hayley and Payton Chapman, Wesley Graham, Liam, Aiden and Finnigan McKenzie, and a sister and spouse Sarah (Les) Stees, Geneseo.
He was preceded in death by his parents Carl and Margaret Burgston, sisters Lois and Dorothy Burgston, great granddaughter Simone Chapman, and a nephew Larry Stees.
