Soren Benson was born in Bygstad, Norway, on February 6, 1885, and passed on November 27, 1978, at the Prairie View Nursing Home East, Limon Colorado. As a young man he came to America in 1905, making Limon his home. He was employed for 45 years with the Rock Island Railroad Company in engine service as a hostler. He retired from the railroad in 1950; He was married to Lottie Olson in September of 1910. To this union was born one daughter, Louise Benson Shackelford.
As a child he was baptized into the Lutheran faith. He was a charter member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Limon a 60-year member of the Odd fellow Lodge No. 179 at Limon and a member of the United Transportation Union of Railway employees.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Lottie, his mother and father, three sisters and three brothers. He leaves to morn his death, his daughter, Louise of Limon; one sister-in-law, Mrs. Ruth Johnson of Hartland, Minnesota; a number of nieces and nephews in Washington, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Denver, and a host of friends.
Funeral services were held from the Zion Lutheran Church at Limon, on Thursday, November 30, 1978, at 10:00a.m. The service was officiated by Reverend Kurt Sortland.
Tom Anderson sang "How Great Thou Art" and "Life's Railway to Heaven accompanied by Mrs. Annabelle Ottem. Roy Smith, Lester Anderson, John Hendricks, Lee Haberthier, Nate Einertson, and Kenneth Wilson were pallbeareres. Burial was at the Evergreen Cemetery at Colorado Springs, with the Evergreen Funeral Home at Colorado Springs in charge of arrangements.
