Wilford Hugo Gopffarth was born Sept. 4, 1938, to Hugo "Red" and Velma D. Gopffarth in Laredo. He grew up in Lolita and graduated from Vanderbilt High School. He then attended Texas A&M University where he graduated Tau Beta Phi with a B.S. degree in chemical engineering. After graduation he joined the Army Reserve and was called to active duty with 149th Armored Division of the U.S. Army in 1962. Following his active duty in the Army he returned to Texas A&M where is received his master's degree in chemical engineering.
Hugo left Texas for the first time to work for DuPont Chemical Co. in Wilmington, Del., and went from there to a successful career in facilities and construction management.
Hugo had a heart for sharing his life and faith with others. In 1977 he started a Bible study with interns and residents from John Peter Smith Hospital. Throughout the years he continued to open his home and heart to others. He was involved with all the activities of his and others' children, such as Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, school projects, and years of coaching Blue Raider baseball.
The education of children was always near and dear to his heart. He worked through the political system to try to ensure that textbooks were accurate and factual. His desire was that every child would receive a great education that would benefit them throughout their lives.
Hugo was an avid Fighting Texas Aggie football fan. He was a member of the 12th Man Foundation and embodied the saying "Once an Aggie, Always an Aggie." Whoop!
