CHRISTMAS TRAGEDY
RESULT OF BOOZE
James T. Carney Chief Actor in a Shocking Domestic Tragedy at Indianapolis Thursday.
James T. Carney, aged 52, a former resident of the New Brunswick neighborhood, south of Lebanon, was the chief actor in a shocking tragedy at Indianapolis on Christmas morning, in which he shot and killed his wife, Susan Adeline Carney, aged 51, and killed himself. The tragedy occurred in the kitchen of their home at 2025 Cooper street, and was witnessed by their twelve-year-old daughter, Laura.
Mrs Carney, according to the story told the police by the little girl, was preparing breakfast when her husband demanded to know what become of a bottle of whiskey that he had brought home at 2 o'clock Thursday morning. Carney was still suffering from the effects of liquor he had drunk the night before, his daughter said.
Mrs. Carney is said to have denied any knowledge of the whiskey, but Carney would not believe her. He left the kitchen and returned soon with a shotgun in one hand and the lost bottle of liquor in the other.
Mrs. Carney ran for the door in an attempt to escape, but her husband was too quick for her. He raised the weapon and fired. The load of shot entered Mrs. Carney's back and neck and she fell forward and died almost instantly.
Carney then placed the butt of the gun on the floor, and resting his chin over the muzzle, reached down and pulled the trigger. The little daughter declared that she did everything she could to prevent her father from taking his life. She seized the weapon when he placed it on the floor, she said, but he was so strong that she could not wrest it from him. Her father pushed her away gently, she said, before he pulled the trigger that brought instant death to himself. Laura ran to the home of a neighbor and the police were called.
The Carneys had been married nearly twenty-five years and had reared a family of four daughters and two sons. Laura was the only living at home. It is reported that he had on previous occasions, when in his cups, tried to kill Mrs. Carney.
The funeral was held Saturday from the late residence of Mr. and Mrs. Carney, and the remains of both were buried in a double grave at Mt. Jackson. Mrs. John Patterson, of this city, was among those who attended the funeral.
James T. Carney was a son of Martin Carney, who came here with his family several years ago and resided in Harrison township. One of the sons, Moses, married a daughter of the late Moses P. Higgins. Carney was well known to the older citizens of Harrison township. He was a carpenter, and worked at that trade in Indianapolis.
