Elizabeth
John
Eli Jr. (1845-1848)
David
Jacob
This family of six moved to Elkhart County, Indiana in 1851, making the trip by team and wagon. This country was new at that time. They built themselves a log cabin in the woods. They did not have a door for a while, just a heavy blanket. When they had fresh meat the wolves would come to the house at night.
Eli would have to get up, go out and crack the whip to chase them away. One time their neighbor was clearing and burning brush, and the wind was from that direction. They had just a tiny baby (Jacob) and they had quite a time to keep it from suffocating in the smoke.
They had seven more children in Elkhart County, Indiana:
Christian
Joseph
Jonas
Samuel
Barbara
Kathrine
Moses
Year later, Eli said to his granddaughter, "When we came here, all the money I had was five dollars. What do you think I bought?" She did not know, so he said, "I bought a big kettle to heat water and to cook our eatables in." They had to go through many hardships.
Barbara died at the home of a granddaughter where they had gone to spend the day. She was 77 years, two months and 27 days old.
Eli was nearly blind in his later years. He died at the old homestead at the age of 81 years, ten months, and 27 days.
