Thurs., May 16, 1912--A Pleasant Surprise
A very agreeable surprise was given Saturday, May 11, it being the birthday of A. W. Mauck Proprietor of the Newark Hotel. Part of the guests were veterans of the Civil War. They were as follows: John Vaden, George Nelson, Pete Plunket, John Vanskyke, Wm. Todd, Benjamin Framtonnd, Charles Vanskyke and wife, O. S. Leslie and wife, Cap. Johnston and C. M. Hughes. There were other veterans in the community, who for different reasons were not present. The remaining guests were Lon Myers and wife, George Barrows and wife, Leslie Arehart and wife, Samp. Mauck and family, Miss Orma Whitbread and little Dorris McAdams, Stonewall Morris, Cupp and Wm. Myers. A bountiful dinner was served by our amiable hostess, Mrs. Ellen Mauck, who is too well known in the culinary art to need any further commendation. After dinner Mrs. Alma McAdams was called to take a picture of the old comrades, four of whom are up in their eighties. We wish Mr. and Mrs. Mauck many happy returns of the day. (signed) A Guest
