Birth: Sep. 1, 1833
Abbeville County
South Carolina, USA
Death: Nov. 30, 1906
Dallas County

He was born in Abbeville District, South Carolina. His parents moved to Mississippi during his youth. He attended school in Mississippi and entered the University of Mississippi at Oxford, University of Virginia from which he graduated. He attended the law departments at both Yale and Harvard. He returned to Mississippi in 1854 and began the practice of law at Holly Springs. On June 17, 1858 he married Miss Mary V. Salle. They moved to Camden, Arkansas.

During the Civil War, Col. Leake belonged to Forrest's Cavalry. At the close of the war he returned to Camden, where in 1867 he lost his wife. On May 30 1870, he married Mrs. Mary Ann Daly, who was a sister of Col. A. L. McCollum. [A. L. McCollum was editor of the Waco, Texas Tribune at the time of W. W. Leake's death.] His second wife died several years before him.

He was associated with Col. Olin Welborn and Col. John L. Henry in the firm Welborn, Leake & Henry and later Leake, Shepard & Henry and finally Leake, Shepard & Miller. Although involved with the Methodist Episcopal Church and the Masonic fraternity in Arkansas, he did not affiliate with either after coming to Texas.

By his first wife he had four children: Mrs. Charles L. Dexter, Samuel A. Leake, Mrs. H. S. Keating and William Wirt Leake. By his second wife he had two children, one of whom, Mrs. I. Jalonick survives. Two siblings survived him: C. W. Leake of Abilene, Texas and Mrs. E. M. Williams of Frost, Louisiana.
