NOTE: Birth data shown above is likely, not definitive.
The son of John & Eliza E. (Roth) Cress, in 1860, he was a laborer living in Straban Township, Adams County, and stood 5' 9" tall with brown hair and black eyes.
A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Gettysburg September 3, 1864, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg September 4 as a private with Co. G, 209th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company May 31, 1865. There is an age discrepancy that appears to be a clerical error. The company register claims that he was born c. 1830, but there is little doubt that this Alfred Cress was the man who served with Co. G, 209th Pennsylvania Infantry.
After the war, he married Mary E. ? and fathered Alberta (b. @1875). In 1880, he lived in White Oak, Warren County, Iowa, and, in 1908, in Topeka, Shawnée County, Kansas, but died in Manhattan.
Alfred was one of five brothers where served during the Civil War. He and at least three of them for certain moved to the Midwest after the war.
