Born November 2, 1889, Ammon was named for "the Twins", his father Albert Riley and
his uncle, Ammon Wylie Austin. As he grew older he was taught to farm the land as
his father and grandfather had before him. At age 29, living in Sparta, Tennessee,
he registered for the draft of WWI. Though not married, he did request an exemption
as the primary caregiver for his parents. In 1918, he was a self employed farmer
and his parents were dependent on him. Like his uncle Ammon, his own parents
offered him land in lieu of marriage, if he would stay in the area and on the farm.
Ammon chose land over marriage until age 35. He married Mary Stocia Mitchel in 1924.
By 1930, his property had increased in value to $5000. He was considered very
wealthy for this time during the Great Depression.
