David came to Wisconsin from Onondaga Co, NY with his parents when not quite 2 years of age. He was brought up on a farm in the town of Hartford. He enlisted 22 Feb 1864, in Co. C, 29th W.V.I., and served until the close of the Civil War. He was married at Hartford, 28 Feb 1867, to Miss Amanda Nelson, daughter of George Nelson and Elvira Antoinette Fairchild, and a native of Wisconsin. They have four children: George L., Edward J., Adrian Guy and Harry H. Harter.
Since 1864, Mr. Harter has made his home on Section 18 of Hartford as a farmer.
