Joe Samuel Morris, age 86, of 200 Old Surl Rd. Roxboro, died Saturday, January 30, 2010 at his home. Born in Cluster Springs, VA, he was the son of the late William Samuel and Rosa Etta M. Morris. He was also preceded in death by his three brothers, James Morris, Stover Morris, and Marshal Morris. Mr. Morris was retired from Roxboro Dye, where he had worked as a supervisor. He had also worked at Tarheel Chevrolet after retirement as a vehicle transporter. He was a veteran of W.W. II having served in the 116th Infantry. He was a member of Mt. Harmony Baptist Church where he served as usher for several years.
Surviving include his wife Nancy Lankford Morris of the home; a daughter, Betty Jo Morris Garrett and husband Keith, of Timberlake, NC; a son, Lanny Gray Morris and wife Sherry of Snow Camp, NC; two step-daughters, Deborah Parker and husband Jim of Aurora, Illinois, and Trecia Sanford and husband Darryl, of Roxboro; three step-sons, Ronald Lankford and wife Kathy, Michael Lankford and girlfriend Bonnie, and David Lankford and wife Sandy, all of Roxboro; five sisters, Dorothy Davis of Spindale, NC, Annie Hayes, Alvernia Goodson, and Eleanor Russell, all of Richmond, VA, and Ruth Morris Bailey of Seatle, WA.; four grandchildren, Bryan Garrett and wife Carol, Heather Garrett Bowling and husband Frankie, Kim Janey and husband David, and Samuel Morris and wife Tanya; eight great-grandchildren; ten step-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren.
Funeral Services will be held 11:00 AM Thursday Febuary 4, 2010 at the Brooks and White Funeral Home. The Rev. Barry Chambers will be officiating. Pallbearers will be Bryan Garrett, Frankie Bowling, Danny Morris, Stover Morris, Pete Erdner, and Charles Reaves. Honorary Pallbearers will be James Fogleman, Rex Blalock, Raeford Moore, Dean Painter, Todd Fuquay, Bruh Wilkerson, and Alan Stovall. Interment will be privately held at the Black Walnut Baptist Church Cemetery in Cluster Springs, VA.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 10:00 to 11:00 AM on Thursday February 4, 2010 at the Brooks and White Funeral Home, and other times at the home.
