|Birth: ||Jun. 28, 1851|
|Death: ||Aug. 19, 1895|
Daughter of George Acheson and Mary Hemphill Acheson. Proper given name is believed to be Ella; the name Ellie was probably used in life and is what is engraved on her headstone at Mare Island Cemetery.
Married Charles Ansyl Clarke on October 22, 1874.
Survived by her husband and a daughter, Mary Louise Clarke.
The obituary/death notice published for Charles A Clarke implied that he was to be buried by the side of his wife, Ella (a/k/a Ellie) Acheson Clarke, who died in 1895 and was buried and remains buried at what is now known as Mare Island Cemetery (which in 1895 was a Naval facility).
There was some confusion on the part of this contributor as to the separation of burials of this long-married Navy couple; thanks to the input of several F/A/G contributors I believe that the "mystery" has now been explained.
Contributor Chip provided this contributor a link to a description of the history of Mare Island Cemetery. Evidently the cemetery was "....closed since November 1, 1921, except for previous commitments...."
That being the case, if the Clarke's had not specifically made burial plans for Charles to be buried beside his wife, the option of burial in 1924 was not available. I suspect that the information supplied to the Fairfield newspaper about Charles' death and burial plans at Mare Island was done before the family knew that burial there was not an option, and the decision was made for his interment at the San Francisco National Cemetery.
Thanks to everyone who helped me try to figure out the physical burials for this couple - your emails, offers of help, and links to cemetery listings has been greatly appreciated!
If anyone needs any help for burials in Jefferson County, Iowa, let me know and I'll be glad to repay the efforts!
