Murder at Bentonville, Arkansas!! On March 4, 1871, Dr. James Worthington was shot and killed instantly at his mill while oiling some machinery. James Abner had been talking with Worthington before the shooting. It is reported that Abner had worked for Worthington on his farm, about two years ago, and once the crop was made, Worthington refused to pay him and whipped and drove him off. The family story is that Abner had written a love letter to one of the Worthington daughters, and Dr. Worthington intercepted it and ran the man off the property.
Dr. James Worthington was born 27 June 1824 in Warren Co., Tennessee. The son of Samuel and Mary "Polly" (Barnes) Worthington, he had one sister, Sarah, who married Dr. William Renshaw. He is buried in the Bentonville Cemetery, beside his infant son Samuel and his mother who died in 1866.
On 21 July 1846 at McMinnville, Tennessee, Dr. Worthington married Nancy Emeline Faulkner, daughter of Asa and Annis (Wolfe) Faulkner. They lived in George, Tennessee and Texas before moving to Bentonville in 1863. To this union were born 12 children, six of them dying in infancy.
Mary was born 14 Aug. 1847 in Trenton, Georgia. She died 9 May 1853, at the same place.
Sarah Annis was born 2 June 1849 in Trenton, Georgia. She died 31 July 1933, near Linn Creek, Missouri, and had five children. On 21 December 1871 in Benton Co., Arkansas, she married Joseph M. Farmer.
Elizabeth was born 18 July 1851 in Trenton, Georgia, and died before 1910 near Pineville, MO. She married John M. Conklin in Feb. 1872 and had 12 children.
Augusta/Augustus was born 20 Jan. 1854 in Trenton, Georgia and died 24 Jan. 1855 in the same place.
An unnamed boy was born 18 Dec. 1855 at Trenton, Georgia and died 29 Sept. 1856 in Pelham, Tennessee.
Martha Josephine was born 3 July 1857 at Pelham, Tennessee and died 3 Nov. 1951 at Huntington, New York. Buried in Washington, Indiana. She married Mathadas Mathew Grantham on 15 April 1877 in Bentonville, Arkansas.
Florence was born 2 April 1859 in Pelham, Tennessee and died after 1910 in Ada, Oklahoma. She married J. Calvin Robertson on 5 June 1887 at Bentonville, Arkansas.
Emma was born 25 June 1861 at Smithville, Tennessee and died 22 Sept. 1868 or 1878.
An unnamed girl was born 17 July 1863 at Paris, Texas. She was stillborn.
Samuel was born 5 Aug. 1864 at Paris, Texas and died of croup on 20 March 1867 at Bentonville, Arkansas. He is buried beside his father and grandmother at Bentonville Cemetery.
Asa was born 4 Nov. 1866 at Bentonville. He died 1882/1888 at Bentonville, Arkansas.
Thomas G. was born 13 March 1870 at Bentonville, Arkansas. He lived in California. He eloped with Musa Louis about 1890 in Indian Territory, Oklahoma and they had six children.
After the death of Dr. Worthington in 1871, Nancy married in Bentonville, Arkansas, James O. Alexander on 24 March 1875. No children were born to this union. Nancy was born Nov. 8, 1828 at McMinnville, Tennessee and died 20 June 1910 in Ada, Oklahoma. She is buried there in Little Egypt Cemetery. Two months before her death, at the age of 82, she is shown in the 1910 census living at the home of her daughter Florence Robertson and is listed as a "boarder" working at a dry goods store, and had missed no days of work that year.
