Alma Signal, Dec. 19, 1918, page 1:
George Washington Leonhart

Our deceased brother and fellow citizen, Mr. George Washington Leonhart was born on the 23rd day of March, 1842 at Columbus, Ohio. On December 24th, 1866 he was unified in holy wedlock with Miss Caroline Tyler. To this union ten children were born, two of which died in infancy.

In the spring of 1878 Mr. Leonhart moved to Kansas and resided on a farm in Kaw township, Wabaunsee County. After having tilled the soil for 36 consecutive years he sold the Leonhart farm in the year of 1914 and moved to McFarland where, however, he resided one year only. After having sold his residence there, he moved to St. Marys in 1916, and there he resided until he died. His first wife Caroline Leonhart died June 29th, 1903. On Dec. 1st, 1905, he was again united in marriage with Katherine Hendericks.

Always having been in the very best of health and strength it was indeed a hard burden for him to bear when in the month of July of this year he was stricken down with cancer of the stomach. About August 15th this year he undertook a journey to Kansas City for the purpose of taking special treatments, but nothing could arrest the fatal illness in its progress. After returning home again he became bedfast and life's day slowly ebbed away. Monday afternoon, Dec. 9th, he partook of holy communion and prepared himself for the journey through the valley of the shadow of death. The end came peacefully at 10:30 o'clock Tuesday morning, Dec. 10th. Our departed brother reached the age of 76 years, 8 months and 17 days.

Mr. Leonhart leaves to sadly mourn his death, his loving wife, Mrs. Katherine Leonhart of St. Marys, and the following children: Mrs. Geo. Ramsey, Mrs. Jerome Vanhole of Belvue, Mrs. Nora Bays of Pine Bluff, Ark., Herman, Francis and Clarence Leonhart of Delphos, Kan., Grover and Earl Leonhart of Belvue, Kan.
Furthermore his departure is mourned by 23 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. On Wednesday, Dec. 11th, the early remains of Mr. Leonhart were laid to rest in the family burial lot in Greenwood cemetery at 3 p.m.
