Gysbert, chose to be called Steve, was born to Pieter Sr. and Gisbertje (van Houwelingen) in Arkel, the Netherlands. He came to the United States on the S S Edinburgh in 1865 with his brother, Martinus and his wife, Grietje, and their son, Pieter. He came to this country a single man, but May 7, 1869, he was married to Adrianna (Jane) van Gorp by the Rev. Antonie J. Betten, Sr. Gysbert became a naturalized citizen March 3, 1870.
Gysbert and Adrianna had 11 children - Gysbertje (Gussie), Nellie, Frank, Martin, Peter, Jacob Gysbert, Marie, Dirk (must have died young), Dirk (Dick), Matthew, and John. All of the children attended Wheat Grove School, and as adults were affiliated with Third Reformed Church in Pella.
Gysbert farmed in Black Oak Township, Mahaska Co IA. He raised wheat, corn, oats, Irish potatoes, and hay, and they made butter and molasses. They had horses, cattle, swine and barnyard poultry.
