Grietje was born to Arie and Annigje (de Keijzer) vanRooden of Oosterwijk. January 24, 1863 she was married to Maritnus deJong by Hugo Bel, the mayor of Oosterwijk, Zuid Holland. Grietje had a son previously out of wedlock on January 7, 1862. She never divulged the father of her son who she named Hendrik. He was raised by his vanRooden grandparents.
Grietje and Martinus had sons Peter J. and Arie while still in the Netherlands. They took Peter in the spring of 1865 and sailed for the United States. Arie was left behind, probably with grandparents as he was quite young. The grandparents and the rest of their family, including Arie, but not their oldest son, Jan, sailed to the United States in the spring of 1866. There was an outbreak of cholera on the ship and Arie plus 3 uncles and an aunt died. They were either buried at sea or on McNab's Island in Halifax Harbor where the ship stopped for medical help.
Grietje and Martinus settled first in Marion Co. IA where Arie Cornelius was born. Shortly after they moved to Black Oak Township, Mahaska Co where the remainder of their children were born - Albert, Antonie, Gysbertje, and John.
In 1868 they bought an 80 acre farm and in 1874 added another 80 acres. They had a variety of livestock plus poultry. They made butter and molasses to sell. Grietje spent her last years on Franklin Street in Pella IA. She died suddenly one evening while visiting her daughter, Gusbertje Pothoven.
