Doris Anita (Siders) Colter, 88 of Independence passed away Wed. May 3, 2006 at St. Luke's Hospital. Services will be 2:00 pm, Sat., May 6, 2006 at the Carson-Speaks Chapel, 1501 W. Lexington Ave., Indep. MO with the visitation being held from 12:30 pm until service time. Graveside services will be 4:30 pm, Saturday at the Avalon Cemetery, Avalon, MO. In Lieu of flowers, contributions are suggested in her name to New Hope Christian Church Memorial Fund, 5704 Norfleet Rd., KCMO 64133.
Doris was born at the farm home of her parents, Malden J. Siders and Lula Belle (Bowes) Siders, 4 miles northwest of Avalon, MO on June 13, 1917. She attended Green grade school where all eight grades were taught in a one-room schoolhouse, then on to high school at Avalon, MO where she rode horse back four miles.
On March 20th 1935 she married William Virgil Colter. They became the proud parents of three daughters, Norma L. Popp of Raytown, MO, Joyce L. Sullivan of Blue Springs, MO and F. Elaine Jobes of Independence, MO.
At the age of 12 she became a member of the Presbyterian Church at Avalon, MO. Later she became a member of the Christian Church. Most of her life was lived in Missouri, with the exception of seven years spent in Laramie, WY. In 1952 the family moved to Independence, MO where Blue Ridge Christian Church became her church home. She was an active member in the Yomacls Sunday School Class, the Church and Circles. Later she joined New Hope Christian Church, where many happy hours were spent in Sunday School and Worship Services.
She has been blessed with a large family. Nine grandchildren, twenty-five great grandchildren and Ten great great grandchildren. A sister, Edith M. Porter of Dallas, TX. A son-in-law, Pat Jobes, Norma's companion, Raymond E. Thompson and a host of relatives and friends.
Doris was preceded in death by her parents, a sister, a brother, one grandson, one great grandson, two great granddaughters and a son-in-law, David R. Sullivan. Doris retired from Armco Steel in Aug. 1980 after 25 years of service, after which she enjoyed traveling with family and friends to many parts of the United States and the Holy Land.
