Birth: Oct. 31, 1856
Death: Nov. 7, 1890

James W. (J. W.) Bennett, Jr. was this writer's 3rd cousin; his father James Bennett, Sr. and my great grandmother Paulina (Bennett) Thurman were half-siblings through their father Ezekiel Bennett, Sr.

J. W. was the son of James Bennett, Sr. (1823-1894) who was born in Kentucky and died in Schuyler County, Missouri; and Maria L. "Lovie" (Wells) (Randall) Bennett (1826-1898) who was born in North Carolina and died in Schuyler County, Missouri.

J. W. had the following full-siblings:

Male Infant Bennett 1849 1849
Sarah C. Bennett 1850
E. J. S. Bennett 1853
Charley C. Bennett 1859
Thomas R. Bennett 1863 1930
Forest Dove Bennett 1867 1960
Leo Bennett (twin) 1871 1889
Leon F. Bennett (twin) 1871

J. W. also had one half-sister from his mother's first marriage:

Mary A. Randall 1845

On June 4, 1879 in Sullivan County, Missouri, J. W. married Addie L. Latham. They had one known son who died at age 8:

Bert Oakley Bennett 1889 1898

They may have had other children, but census records are not available which would show this. Since Bert was born in the 10th year of J. W. and Addie's marriage, it is likely they did have other children. The 1890 census of Missouri, which would have shown any other children, was destroyed in a fire at the Missouri State Capitol. Also, due to Bert's birth and death dates, he escaped any census records. This writer would not have known about this child were it not for finding his tombstone on this site.

This is actually a very tragic family. One should note that J. W. and Addie Bennett both died in 1890 when their son Bert was only 1 year old. It is unknown who took care of Bert after this. Then, tragically, he also died just 8 years later.
