|Death: ||Apr. 6, 1886|
His wife's name was Elizabeth H. ?, and their only known child is George A. (b. @1853). He does not appear in any Cumberland County census until 1880 when he was working as a plasterer.
A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in West Chester, Chester County, June 10, 1861, understating his age by four years, elected to the rank of 1st lieutenant, promoted to captain June 24, and mustered into federal service at Baltimore, Maryland, July 26 with Co. I, 1st Pennsylvania Reserves (30th Pennsylvania Infantry). Shortly thereafter, a military board examined him for compentency and issued an "adverse report." Unfortunately, details are lacking in his Compiled Military Service Record. As a result of that examination, the army dismissed him from service (he also tendered a resignation) to date October 16, 1861. The discharge appears to be an honorable one, proof of which comes from a wife who successfully applied to receive a widow's pension based on her husband's service.
He signed his resignation letter "Crop," not "Cropp."
