John C. Panella, Sr., 91, formerly of West State St passed away the morning of January 12, 2015 at his residence in New Castle. Born in New Castle on July 11, 1923, he was the son of the late Anthony Sr. and Lena (Bongivengo) Panella. Surviving at home is his beloved wife of over 70 years, the former Rosemarie C. Manthy, whom he married on May 17, 1944.

During World War II, John served as a Seaman First Class for the United States Navy Armed Guard in the North Atlantic-European Theater from 1942 to 1945. He was also a retiree of Plumbers & Pipefitters Local Union #47 and was a member of the American Legion Post #343, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #315, and the Mariners of Pennsylvania. His family and his Catholic faith were the most important things in his life. He was a member of St. John the Baptist Maronite Catholic Church. Over the years, he sang in the choirs at St. John’s Church, St. Mary’s Church, and the old St. Joseph’s Church. He enjoyed music, reading, being outdoors, hunting, fishing, and welding. As a welder, people called him “Two Pass”. One of the highlights of his life was a trip to Rome, Italy where he saw Pope John Paul II and was an altar server at a Mass in St. John Lateran Church in Rome. He also returned to his family’s ancestral home in Cese di Liberi, Caserta, Italy, where he met with extended family members.

In addition to his wife, John is survived by his children, six grandchildren, great-grandchildren, four step-great-granddaughter, one sister, a brother, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brothers, Richard Panella, Anthony (Buzzy) Panella, Jr., and James Panella.

Visitation will be held Thursday from 5:00pm to 8:00pm at Ed and Don DeCarbo Funeral Home and Crematory 941 S Mill St. A service of incense will be held Thursday at 7:30pm at the funeral home, conducted by Deacon Richard Stone. The New Castle Area Honor Guard will conduct military rites Friday at 9:15am at the funeral home. A procession will leave the funeral home Friday at 9:30am to attend a funeral liturgy at 10:00am at St. John Church, officiated by Chor-Bishop Michael Kail.
