Royal "Roy" Penny Alden was born to Andrew Jackson Alden and Beady Elizabeth Penny in Tamaroa, Perry County, Illinois. He was named after his grandfather, Royal Alden and also carried his mother's surname. As a child growing up in Cairo, Hamilton County, Illinois he learned the newspaper trade from his father who founded and edited many newspapers throughout Southern Illinois. As a young man he worked for a time with the Southern Express Company in Cairo, Illinois as a clerk. Eventually he came back to the newspaper business. In 1891 he bought out The Democrat newspaper in Pinckneyville and became the editor and proprietor. He would also serve several terms in the Illinois State Senate for the 48th District. He was very involved with the Masonic organizations of Knights of Pythias and the Oddfellows. He married May Elizabeth Kane, granddaughter of Illinois' first Secretary of State, Elias Kent Kane who was also a U.S. Senator from Illinois. Royal Penny Alden is a lineal descendant of Mayflower pilgrims, John Alden & Priscilla Mullins.
