Cousin Mary "Elizabeth" Cleveland Spence, sister to Pvt James Cleveland, shared that he enlisted at Orange, Texas, before anyone new there would be a war and was sent to the Philipines a few months before the war started. He was taken as a Japanese prisoner of war soon after the war started and was in the Death March. He was last seen by a Timpson soldier who saw him getting on a prisoner ship, then American planes sunk the Japanese ships not knowing that they carried American prisoners. This marker was placed in his memory near the family graves in Corinth Cemetery.
