BIG STONE GAP, Va. - David R. Tipton, 72, Big Stone Gap, Va., passed away Sunday
(Dec. 17, 2006) at Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport, Tenn.

He was born in Pennington Gap, Va., and had lived in Big Stone Gap since 1964.
He was a graduate of Pennington Gap High School; received a B.A. in Music
Education from East Tennessee State University, and an M.A. in Music Education
from Union College in Kentucky. He served in the U.S. Army as a Band Director,
while in Germany. He served as Band Director at Pennington Gap High School,
Thomas Walker High School, Powell Valley High School and John I. Burton High
School, retiring in 1992. He was founder of the "Jerome Street Ramblers" band.


He was proud that his bands were recognized and received numerous awards at band
festivals throughout the Southeastern United States. Dave and his wife,
Angela, loved to travel.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James B. and Hannah Mae (Richards)
Tipton; a brother, James Tipton; and a sister, Virginia Tipton Parsons.

He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Angela H. Tipton; a daughter, Lori
Simonton and her husband, U.S. Army Maj. John R. Simonton, Clarksville, Tenn.;
one son, David R. Tipton, Jr. and his wife Nina, Virgie, Ky.; two grandchildren,
John Simonton, II and Alexandria Simonton; one brother, Robert H. Tipton and
wife Ann, Noblesville, Ind.; a most devoted and loving aunt, Mrs. David "Aunt
Sue" Pence, Pennington Gap, Va.; sister-in-law, Mrs. James (Sadie) Tipton, La
Follette, Tenn.; several nieces and nephews; and a granddaughter of the heart,
"Angel-Lu."

Family will receive friends 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Trinity United Methodist
Church in Big Stone Gap, Va.


Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Friday at the church, with the
Dr. M.C. Tolbert and Pastor Robert Fultz, Jr. officiating.


Burial will follow in Glencoe Cemetery. Pallbearers will be his former band
members.


In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to be made to the David R.
Tipton Scholarship Fund, UVA-Wise Foundation, One College Avenue, Wise, Va.
