Served with Company I, 19th Indiana Infantry of the famous "Iron Brigade" along with two of his brothers. He was wounded by gun shot at the battle of Gettysburg but recovered to rejoin his unit. The 19th was consolidated into the 20th Indiana Infantry where John served in Company A.
