His plane, either a B-17 or B-29 was shot down
18 Jul 1944.
He was reported M.I.A. in France, 6 Oct 1944.
Reported P.O.W. in Germany, 19 Jan 1945.
He was held at Stalag L3-N.
Reported liberated by the Russians 16 Mar 1945.

Stalag L3 was the basis for the 1962 movie "The
Great Escape" starring Steve McQueen and for
the 70s sit-com "Hogan's Heroes."
Stalag L3 was originally designed for the
holding of R.A.F. (Royal Air Force) aviators and
later actually held 3,500 pilots and 7,500
U.S. Airmen.

Mr. Evans

Funeral services for Harold William Evans, 70, of Kempner, will be held at 2 p.m. today (Thursday) in the Briggs-Gamel-Wilcox Chapel with Lon Jones officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery.
Mr. Evans died Monday in the Olin E. Teague V.A. Center in Temple.
He was born March 24, 1917, in Nebraska. He was a resident of Lampasas County for 20 years and was retired from civil service. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and a member of V.F.W. Post #8577 of Copperas Cove and American Legion Post of Lampasas.
He married Mittie Little in 1981 in Lampasas.
Mr. Evans is survived by his wife, Mittie Evans of Kempner; one son, Jerry Evans of Kempner; one daughter, Susan Lovette of Kempner; his father, Loyd Evans of Nebraska; three brothers, Harry Evans of Iona, Mo., James Robert Evans of Plainview, Neb., and Elbert Evans of Foster, Neb.; three sisters, Peggy Felchner of Plainview, Neb., Elsie Pojar of Springfield, Mo., and Pearl Stuthman of Norfold, Neb.
Briggs-Gamel-Wilcox Funeral Directors is in charge of the arrangements.
