PIONEER DIES
Mrs. Catherine Schmelz passed away Saturday morning at the Hospital - burial Monday.

The last summons came to another of the early residents of this locality Saturday morning when Mrs. Catherine Schmelz died at St. James hospital from a complication of diseases.

Mrs. Schmelz was the widow of Henry Schmelz, who died July 23, 1918. Catherine Greving was born in Mercer County, Ohio, May 15, 1851, and grew to young womanhood there. She married April 6, 1869, to Henry Schmelz, in Ohio. The young couple lived in Toledo, Ohio, for about six years and from there moved to Brainerd, where they resided for ten years. While there Mr. Schmelz was employed as foreman in the woodworking and cabinet making department and built the first Pullman car for the Northern Pacific. He was of an inventive turn of mind and designed several devices which came into accepted use.
After ten years the family felt the call of the land and a farm was purchased near Perham where they made their home for the major portion of their lives. Having reached the age of retirement Mr. and Mrs. Schmelz purchased a small house in the village, turning the farm over to their son, Henry, who now operates it. After Mr. Schmelz' death Mrs. Schmelz continued to live in the village, spending her time at her own home or in visiting her children. The past four years she had been in declining health which gradually developed more serious tendencies until her fatal illness.
Mrs. Schmelz is survived by four children, thirty-seven grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren. The living children are: Mrs. Barney Kueber, Mrs. Henry Tobkin and Henry Schmelz, of this locality and Peter Schmelz of Bird Island. Two of her children died in infancy and three others, Mrs. Jos. L. Doll, Mrs. Andrew Dietlein and Frank Schmelz, in later years.
The funeral was held Monday morning at St. Henry's church, Rev. Fr. Haupt, officiating. A large number from the village and surrounding country attended. The pall bearers were six grandsons, George and Albert Schmelz, Peter Doll, Alois and Vincent Kueber and James Tobkin.
