"Noel W. Halverson, 93, died of natural causes Aug.22, 2010 at his home in Buena Vista. Noel was born Jan. 17, 1917, in a remodeled logging camp bunk house in Rosholt, Wisc., to Ben and Cora Halverson. Early in his life, he gained experience learning to chop and saw wood with his uncles. After graduating from high school in 1934, he spent the next 50 years in the logging and saw mill industry. Over the years, Noel became a distinguished poet, publishing three poetry books.
He was known around the Buena Vista area for his poetry readings. His books have recently been accepted into the University of Washington Library system and will soon be available worldwide. In 1994, Noel married Mary L. Gross. Their love and devotion to each other over the past 16 years is a testament to living a rich life quietly and simply sharing God's love.
Noel was preceded in death by his first wife, Hildegarde; his parents; three brothers; and a sister.
Noel is survived by his wife, Mary; his sister, Esther Crouch; his sons, Daniel, Bruce, Douglas, Rodney and Thane; his daughter, Cindy Bernhardt; and their spouses; 15 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren. He is also survived by six adult stepchildren and numerous step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at the Oak Street Chapel Anglican Church, 142 Oak St., Buena Vista, on Thursday, Aug. 26 at 11 a.m. Public viewing is offered Wednesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Runyan Funeral Home in Buena Vista and again between 10 a.m. and 10:45 a.m. at the church on Thursday.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Noel's name may be sent to the Angel of Shavano Hospice, 8044 W. Highway 50, Suite 202, Salida, CO 81201."
