SSG Richard Joseph Grieme, Vietnam Veteran, Native of Raleigh, NC.
Staff Sergeant Richard Joseph Grieme was a casualty of the Vietnam War. As a member of the Army Selective Service and a Draftee, SSG Grieme served our country until June 20th, 1970 in Cambodia. He was 23 years old and was not married. It was reported that Richard died from small arms fire or grenade. His body was recovered. SSG Grieme is on panel 09W, line 072 of the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington D.C.
Richard Grieme was not in my platoon but almost everyone knew him. He was a friend to all. One day in the Spring of 1970 about 30 of us were loaded on a C7 for a long move. Richard had flown some and was talking to the crew because he had never flown a twin engine before. After we took off they let him have the co-pilot's place and take the controls. He enjoyed it very much and it was the last time I remember being around him. We lost two men on June 20th 1970 in Cambodia, the other was also his friend. Our Company has a reunion every year and we always talk about them. From a friend, Larry Touchstone.
He served with Charlie Company, 1st Battalion, 5th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division(AMBL), USARV.
He was awarded The Combat Infantryman's Badge(CIB), The Purple Heart Medal for his combat related wounds, The Vietnam Service Medal, The Republic of Vietnam Campaign Service Medal, The National Defense Service Medal and The Good Conduct Medal.
