Maria CONLON immigrated from Ballinamore, Co Leitrim, with her mother (Mary SMITH Conlon) and at least seven of her brothers and sisters. Her father, Roger Conlon had died in Ireland in 1845 and her mother died on board the ship and was buried at sea.

After arriving in New York, the family made their way to Auburn, Cayuga Co, NY, where there was a large Irish community.

Maria was married there to Moris Murphy on Aug 15, 1855. He was also from Ireland and had come to America at the age of 13 years. Born in Levitstown, Co Kildare, in 1833, he died at a young age on Apr 24 1861.
He is buried in St Joseph's Cemetery in Auburn NY and listed in Find-a-Grave. He has been linked below, however, at this time I am able to update his listed information. Records at the cemetery reflect relocation dates for the graves.

Two other siblings of Maria CONLON Birney are also buried in St Joseph's, Auburn NY. Maria's sister, Rose CONLON McCartin, and her brother, Charles Conlon.

Rose Conlon ( b. abt 1830 d. May 6 1886) married Hugh Michael McCartin (b. 1824 in Ireland d. Nov 10 1884) they had two children Michael and Mariah. All are buried in St Joseph's Cemetery, Auburn NY, and are listed in FindaGrave.
Charles Conlon is also buried in the McCartin plot, he was born in 1833 and died on Jan 4, 1886 in Auburn.

After Moris's death, Maria left New York and came to Missouri, living in Springfield, and bringing her three children with her.

1. Sarah Murphy, born Jul 9, 1856, died Apr 24, 1933. She married Patrick H. Gillespie on Nov 19, 1877. He was born in Ireland on Mar 17, 1839 and died in Memphis, Shelby Co, TN on Jul 15 1913. They had seven children, three of them died young. Maurice, b. Aug 6 1880, Danny, b. Feb 1 1883, and Louisa, birth unknown. They are buried in the Conlon-Birney-Murphy plot.
Other children of Sarah and Patrick Gillespie were: Charles Edward Gillespie, Francis R. Gillespie, Mary Genevieve GILLESPIE Tinkler, and Alwin James Gillespie.

2. Charles A. Murphy, born May 15, 1858. He died unmarried in Springfield on Dec 26, 1909.

3. Stephen Augustus Murphy, born Oct 15, 1859, died in Springfield MO May 1, 1954. He married Margaret Rosina SCHOLTEN on Dec 27, 1882 in Springfield MO.

Maria CONLON Murphy was married to her second husband, James Birney, in Springfield on May 1, 1870. He was born in Ireland and after marrying the widow, he helped to raise her three children and then they had three more children to add to the mix.

Mary Elizabeth Birney, b. Feb 13 1871, she died young in Springfield, Katherine Regina Birney, b. Oct 14 1872 , and John Thomas Birney, b. Oct 3, 1874.

Katherine Regina (Kate) Birney married Francis Burns on Dec 31, 1895 and they had six children. They moved to Chicago IL and both died there, Francis on Oct 31, 1936, and Kate on Feb 12, 1965.

John Thomas Birney, married Bessie WADE Murphy, on Nov 19, 1929. They both died in San Luis Obispo Co, California, Bessie on Mar 14 1959, and John on Jul 6, 1963. They did not have children.
