J. S. Crain, 86, Civil War veteran of Decatur, died Saturday morning, February 20, 1932 in the home of his son in Decatur. He had been in failing health for months.
Mr. Crain was born near Bement on March 1, 1845. With the exception of four years in Iowa, he passed his entire life in Illinois. He came to Decatur from Atwood in October 1917. At the outbreak of the Civil War he enlisted in Company H, 107th IL Volunteer Infantry. He served throughout the war, taking part in General Sherman's March to the Sea. He was wounded in the Battle of Atlanta. He was a member of Dunham Post G.A.R., attending meetings regularly as long as his health permitted. He was a member of the First Church of God.
Mr. Crain's wife died on January 4, 1885. He leaves six sons: T. H. and Virgil E. of Decatur; Otis of Jacksonville FL; Charles of Seattle WA; and Arthur of St. Elmo. Also surviving is a sister, Mrs. Emily Clapp, Decatur; twelve grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at the Church of God with burial in Mackville Cemetery, Atwood.
