James R. Nation was the son of James W. Nation and Delilah H. Ray. He is first found in the 21 Sep 1850 Census Records along with his parents living in Wayne Township, Jefferson County, Ohio.

He married Eliza Jane Blackburn on 18 Jul 1857 in Jefferson County, Ohio. Performed by the Rev. J.D. Cramer, Minister of the Gospel. Mrs. J.D. Cramer, witness. Three sons would be born to this union: William F. Nation, 26 Jun 1858, John J. Nation, 13 Aug 1860 and James R. Nation, 10 Sep 1862, all in Jefferson County, Ohio.

In the 14 Jun 1860 Census Records, James, his wife Eliza and their son are living in Wells Township, Jefferson County, Ohio.

At 26 years of age, he would enlist in the Civil War in Smithfield Township, Jefferson County, Ohio on 11 Aug 1862 in the Union Forces with the Ohio Volunteers for a period of 3-years. He was mustered into service on 21 Aug 1862 at Camp Dennison, Ohio. James served in Company B, Ohio 52nd Infantry Regiment where he obtained the rank of Private.

Just five months later, he was mustered out of service on 09 Jan 1863 while in a hospital located in Nashville, Davidson County, Tennessee as the result of the highly contagious rubeola virus/ aka measles. The surgeon generals death report was submitted and dated 10 Jan 1863.

His wife, a resident of Crossroads Township, Jefferson County, Ohio, would file for her widows pension on 07 May 1863, application #20.786, certificate #20.114 and later a declaration for minors pension on 29 Mar 1864, application #152.270, certificate # 131.214, in Stubenville, Jefferson County, Ohio.

Eliza later remarried on 19 May 1868, in Tuscarawas County, Ohio, to Charles A. Brooks, performed by: P. Stans Hooper, Magistrate, at which time her widows pension was stopped. Each of her children would still be entitled to their minor pensions through their guardian until such time as their 16th birthday.

James was 27 years of age.
